Xochitl R., PA-C — The New Icons

Driven by a desire to be useful and do her part, when her dermatology practice closed to the public due to COVID-19, Xochitl immediately transitioned to in-person and telemedicine Urgent Care to help with the pandemic. The adjustment was challenging at first, as were some cases, but once she got in her groove, she was unstoppable. With a fearless approach to life and an eternally optimistic attitude, Xochitl used this time to start a new fellowship, mentor future PAs, speak at virtual conferences and work on opening a restaurant with her husband.

REMEMBER WHY YOU STARTED.

WHEN YOU FEEL LIKE GIVING UP – IF YOU EVER FEEL THAT WAY – WHAT DO YOU DO TO RISE ABOVE?

I rarely ever feel like giving up. I am extremely goal oriented and tenacious. I carefully choose goals that I deeply care about and subsequently design action plans that will allow me to achieve those goals. Remembering why I started and why I set those goals in the first place help me persevere when challenges arise.

2020 HAS BEEN A TOUGH YEAR ACROSS THE BOARD – HOW ARE YOU TACKLING IT? WHAT HAS IT TAUGHT YOU?

I think what has gotten me through every difficult period of my life including 2020, is seeing challenges as growth opportunities.  Instead of asking myself- “Why is this happening to me?”, I ask myself-  “What is this teaching me?”. Every difficult moment, failure, loss, mistake, and challenge, presents a new opportunity to learn and grow. This year has clarified what is important to me and how much I have to be grateful for. It has taught me resilience and flexibility. It reignited my passion for helping others live healthier and happier lives. It slowed me down and solidified my healthy habits and self-care practice. My ability to cultivate this positive mindset during difficult times stems from small daily habits such as meditation, gratitude practice, affirmations, reading, and exercise.
