Ask Stevie why she became a veterinarian and she’s got two words for you: Steve Irwin! Stevie loved animals from day one and spent a lot of time watching Animal Planet and her life-hero, Steve on TV. She may not be hunting crocodiles, but Stevie knows her six-year-old self would be very proud that she now spends her days (and nights) saving animals and providing her patients’ human companions with much-needed reassurance.
THIS YEAR MY MOTTO HAS BEEN ‘YOU CAN’T HAVE IT ALL, ALL AT ONE TIME, AND THAT’S OK.’
WHAT DO DO YOU DO FOR WORK?
I am an emergency veterinarian who works exclusively the overnight shifts on weekends and holidays.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BECOME A VETERINARIAN?
I have loved animals since before I can remember. A huge inspiration for me was Animal Planet, and specifically Steve Irwin. I remember soaking up every second of animal-related TV I could get, and the fire never died! 6 year old me would be SO excited with how my life turned out.
WHAT HAS HELPED YOU GET THROUGH THE CHALLENGES OF THIS YEAR?
This year my motto has been “you can’t have it all, all at one time, and that’s OK.” 2020 has been a year of give and take – imbalance and a lot of unknowns, and realizing that I don’t have to have all the answers or a grand plan has been a huge weight lifted off of my shoulders.
WHAT IS AN INTERESTING FACT NOT MANY PEOPLE KNOW ABOUT YOU?
I was homeschooled from 7th – 12th grade, which people who I’ve met later in my life are usually shocked by.
