Katy is a pediatric nurse practitioner who specializes in neurosurgery in the San Francisco Bay Area. Actualizing her childhood dream to be an advocate for children in need, she is passionate about infusing comfort and fun into her patient visits.
IT HAS BEEN THROUGH THE ADVOCACY AND SUPPORT OF THOSE AROUND ME THAT I WAS ABLE TO OVERCOME MAJOR OBSTACLES AND BECOME THE PERSON I AM TODAY.
WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO BE A PNP? I was inspired to become a nurse practitioner by my own experiences as a kiddo. It has been through the advocacy and support of those around me that I was able to overcome major obstacles and become the person I am today, so my dream is to be able to advocate for kiddos in a similar way.
WHY DO YOU LOVE YOUR FIELD?
I love my field because my patients are so incredibly tough, silly, sweet and resilient! Kiddos are THE BEST! I am honored each and every day to learn from them and their families. Also — pediatric neurosurgery is just so fascinating! There is never a dull moment.
2020 HAD A LOT OF CHALLENGES – WHAT HELPED YOU PERSONALLY GET THROUGH IT?
My partner Bryan definitely helped me get through 2020. We had been long distance for a really long time and we started living together a week before shelter in place here in the Bay Area. He has been such a rock to me and I am endlessly grateful for his love and support.
WHAT WAS THE MOST INSPIRING PART LAST YEAR, AND WHERE DID YOU FEEL THE MOST GROWTH?
The most inspiring part of this year has been the strength I have seen in those around me. None of us expected 2020 to be like this, but I know that I for one have become a stronger person because of it. The most growth for me has been as an advanced practice provider – I definitely still have lots and lots to learn but I am proud of the PNP I am today and know that kiddo Katy B would be proud of me.
