Historic moments have converged acutely for Darien, a New York, NY based Emergency Medicine Physician. Darien witnessed the toll of a pandemic on human life while treating patients in the ER and the more personal challenge of being Black in a society whose social dynamics and systemic racism have caused him to fear traveling to work while stay-at-home orders were in place. It’s a painful reality that makes him proud to be fighting injustice. Despite the challenges of this year, Darien says he could not be more proud of the resilience and courage of Black people, his people.
I THINK ABOUT ALL OF THOSE WHO HAVE COME BEFORE ME TO ALLOW ME TO STAND IN THIS MOMENT. THIS MOTIVATES ME TO PUSH HARDER.
WHAT CHARACTERISTICS DO YOU THINK EVERY MEDICAL PROFESSIONAL NEEDS TO SUCCEED?
Humility: always be ready to learn something new!
WHAT ATTRIBUTES DO YOU HAVE IN ABUNDANCE THAT HAVE ALLOWED YOU TO SUCCEED?
Hope! I was given an abundance of optimism by my parents and it has helped me in the most difficult times!
WHAT’S THE BIGGEST CHALLENGE YOU PERSONALLY FACE AT WORK?
Personally & honestly – Being Black. The current social dynamics of our society has made many aware of the active systemic racism and oppression in this world. But this has been a life for many of us since the beginning of time. These current crucial uprisings have exposed a painful reality of evil and injustice, but I could not be more proud of the resilience and courage of Black people, my people.
THE MOST IMPORTANT THING IN LIFE IS… Creating space for others to join you.
YOU CAN’T BE SUCCESSFUL IF… Your heart isn’t in it
